JS Air Curtains supports industry learning in CIBSE Journal CPD module
We’re delighted to feature in the latest CPD module published by CIBSE Journal - a platform recognised for supporting technical learning across the building services industry.
Module 262: Air curtains and doorways as dynamic thermal boundaries focuses on one of the most complex - and often overlooked - aspects of building performance: the open doorway.
Unlike walls or glazing, an open doorway does not act as a fixed thermal barrier. Instead, it behaves as a dynamic interface, driven by airflow, pressure differences, and temperature gradients. In high-traffic environments, these forces can dominate heat loss and significantly affect indoor comfort.
Understanding the physics behind the doorway
This CPD module explores the principles that govern air curtain performance in real conditions - including jet behaviour, momentum, and discharge velocity - alongside external factors such as wind pressure and stack effect, which drive infiltration through open entrances.
It also highlights common failure points, from incorrect setup to building pressure imbalance, and reinforces the importance of correct design and commissioning. The module outlines the limitations of standard tools such as SBEM, and when more advanced modelling approaches like dynamic simulation or CFD are required to fully understand performance.
